Is George Kell in the Hall of Fame because he was a "good ole boy" and Bill Madlock not in cuz he's a brotha?
Kell: 306 78 homeruns 870 RBI 2054 hits .953 fielding 3b, 1 batting title
Madlock: 305 168 860 RBI homeruns 2008 hits .949 fielding 3b, 4 batting titles
Playoffs: Madlock .308 4 HR's 12 RBI
Kell:Zero
Classic case of the good ole boy getting in and leaving out the brotha?
Look at it this way: Kell played in the 1940s, and a 'Hall of Fame' Third Baseman at the time was a player like Frank Baker and Pie Traynor. Defensive guys who didn't hit all 'that' well, but were clearly the best at their position. There WERE no power third basemen then.
In the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Eddie Mathews played third, and hit 500+ home runs; Brooks Robinson was playing then, too, and was a PHENOMENAL defensive third baseman, and STILL had 2848 career this. By the time Bill Madlock retired, Mike Schmidt and George Brett were well into their careers, as well. So, by the time Madlock is eligible for the Hall of Fame, there are FOUR third basemen whose careers he overlapped who did FAR better than he did (counting stats-wise).
Madlock is simply not in the Hall of Fame because he played at the wrong time, and the standards for 3rd Basemen had been dramatically increased.
